If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies. Author Unknown
I love to watch butterflies in my backyard but it seems the last few years, their numbers have decreased. I decided to create a butterfly garden in a small area of my yard so I researched the best plants to support them. Milkweed is important in the Monarch butterfly life cycle. The Monarch lay their eggs on milkweed so the caterpillars have the leaves to eat as soon as they emerge. Below you will see a Monarch caterpillar feeding on the milkweed in my garden.
Once done at the caterpillar stage, the pupa develops. The beautiful Monarch emerges from this to begin it butterfly life. Milkweed in bloom in my pictures below. Even my dog likes it!
Yellow butterflies remind me of my dad so I get especially excited when I see one. This one hung around for quite a while And I enjoyed every minute!
Butterfly bushes can be found in several different colors. I love my purple version and the butterflies do too!
Have you found any particular plant that attracts butterflies to your yard? I would love to hear about your experience!
